Light,
Drama, Exaggeration!
In
this 5 week class discover how to exaggerate the light in your painting
and get more oohs, ahhs and
WOWS from your viewers.
We'll also cover how to get bright juicy colors perfect for fruits and
flowers, how to paint straight from the tube to get an oil-
painting-like piece, and how paint a "washout"—a picture painted in
thirds starting with the darkest at the top and washing out to colorless
at the bottom. We'll create different backgrounds—light and
splashy, dark and dramatic. Learn Vivian's "scribble stroke" and
how it will bring movement to your piece. Class time will be
devoted to a short morning critique, a demo, then painting in class.
Come join the fun and see the light--literally! Vivian works from photos on 140 lb. Fabriano Artisico HOT press paper
and would like students to at least have one sheet of hot press to try.
Students need to bring an already drawn up piece
ready to
paint, along with their reference photo to class each week.
week
1—come to class with a fruit and/or vegetable piece. This can be a
still life with a number of items or a single fruit or vegetable.
It can even be larger than life. It would be good to have at least
one piece of juicy fruit/vegetable cut open. …tomato, watermelon,
strawberry, orange, etc.
week
2---still life with flowers. Can be any number of items or a
larger-than-life single flower.
week
3--- the washout. A single vertical animal—rooster, cat, dog, cow,
etc. A single vase with flowers can be substituted if you're not
an animal person. Have a second piece drawn up—it can be of
anything and have a number of items in it. The vertical format works
best for this style.
weeks
4 and 5---subjects will be decided by class
Supply list for Vivian Sathre's April intermediate/advanced watercolor class:
I will be painting on Fabriano Artistico 140 lb hot press. Buy at least one sheet of the hot press of your choice. (Please come to class with your picture already drawn up—there will be no class time devoted to drawing.)
If these paints aren't in your palette you might want to purchase some of them:
Translucent
Cad Red Light
Alizarin Crimson
Rose Madder Genuine
Winsor yellow (or any transparent warm yellow)
Yellow Ochre
Manganese Blue hue
Sap Green
When I paint directly I wear out brushes quickly so I buy Cheap Joe's Golden Fleece brushes to use. (size 10) They are very inexpensive. However, you do not need to have them.
I'm looking forward to meeting you.
